Thurston County Directory Landscape
Thurston County people directories do not form one master list. Each source records a defined public relationship: state agency service, college teaching, ownership, a recorded transaction, a credential, or residence during a printed year. Start with the directory whose purpose fits the person. A missing result can mean the person belongs in another system, not that no relevant record exists.

Government and school sources work best for a known public role. A parcel roll answers who owns or receives tax mail for land, not every person who lives there. Printed sources are strongest when a year and place are known. Professional directories confirm a formal credential or business filing rather than a home address.
Thurston Government Staff Directories
The Washington State Employee Contacts directory is especially useful in the capital region. Search by last name, first name, agency, or a combination. None of the fields is marked required. For county government, Thurston publishes department and elected-office contacts rather than a verified countywide employee-name database. A department's main line is the sound fallback when a person does not appear.

Agency is a valuable filter in Olympia, where the same surname may occur across many state offices.
WSDOT offers a second official staff search by last name, first name, email address, city, or phone number. It allows the first few characters and shows Name, Phone Number, City, and Org Code. Broad searches display only the top 50 results, so add an Olympia, Lacey, or Tumwater work city when possible.
Thurston County Education Directories
Evergreen State College's faculty directory accepts a name, filters by field of study, and provides A-Z last-name links. Results can show a display name, division, institutional contact, location, and a biography link. Some division or location cells are blank. It is a faculty source, not a student roster or proof of a personal address.

The controls support either a known-name search or a broader browse by discipline and surname initial.
Olympia School District uses department and staff cards. One inspected entry displayed a name, Program Manager title, named responsibilities, and direct work phone. No public student directory was verified, and an older Evergreen alumni directory was password protected. Current student, alumni, and family details should not be inferred from staff pages.
Thurston Property Owner Directories
The County Assessor's A+ parcel search turns the tax roll into an owner directory. Official instructions allow owner or taxpayer name, parcel, and situs-address routes, though the inspected legacy form showed parcel and address controls rather than a name box. It accepts an 11-digit property number or an address search that omits city, state, ZIP, street type, and direction.
A parcel card may display the owner, taxpayer, separate mailing and situs addresses, legal description, values, sale history, and exemptions. Situs means the physical property address. The mailing address is where tax correspondence goes. Neither field proves present occupancy. Continue from a sale recording number to the Auditor's EagleWeb document index when a deed party or past transaction matters.
Address distinction. A mailing address can locate an owner elsewhere, while the situs identifies the parcel; neither should be treated as a complete resident directory.
GeoData property maps add parcel boundaries, owner, address, ZIP, incorporated status, and jurisdiction layers. The Treasurer's annual foreclosure material can list a delinquent owner and property. These sources describe legal and tax relationships, while printed reverse directories can help identify a past subscriber at an address.
Recorded-Party Directories in Thurston
Auditor records function as a directory of parties to deeds, mortgages, easements, liens, plats, releases, leases, and other filed instruments. A grantor is a person or entity giving an interest; a grantee receives it. Search advice allows a name or parcel, while an Auditor File Number, or AFN, points to one recorded item.

EagleWeb's start year and full result fields were not established during inspection. Online images are also limited for privacy, yet public records remain available in the Auditor's office. Copies can be requested by phone at 360-786-5405, in person, or by mail with the AFN, return address, and payment. Thurston Professional People Directories
Official professional and business directories answer whether a person or entity holds a public credential or filing. The Corporations and Charities Filing System can connect an entity with a UBI, status, registered agent, governor, public address, and filing identifiers. A registered-agent address is a legal service location and may belong to a professional agent, not the principal's home.
The Department of Health Provider Credential Search covers health professionals, while L&I Verify covers contractor and trade registration details. Washington State Bar and licensing-board directories serve attorneys and other regulated fields. Search exact and variant names, then match the credential number, type, status, issue or expiration information, and discipline link before deciding two similar names refer to the same person.
These people directories provide current official relationships, not a guarantee of residence or identity beyond the filing. When a portal provides metadata but not the underlying order or filing, use the responsible agency's request channel.
Historical Thurston County Directories
The Washington State Library city-directory inventory begins with Olympia volumes in 1872 and runs, with gaps, through 2013. Olympia telephone books survive from 1922 through 2010 with gaps. Tumwater appears inside Olympia volumes in selected years beginning in 1882, while Lacey appears in runs beginning in 1974. Tenino, Yelm, Rainier, Rochester, and Littlerock also have listed coverage.

The inventory shows why an “Olympia” title can still contain people from smaller Thurston County communities.
These volumes are not a full online database. Ordinary walk-in access closed in July 2025, and the current notice offers limited Thursday afternoon appointments by email. Ask whether the chosen phone book contains a reverse or criss-cross section, which lists an address first. The web inventory does not identify those sections by year.
Thurston Names Before Modern Directories
The 1984 federally funded Frontier Justice project indexed every named person and subject in Washington territorial cases. Thurston probate abstracts reach back to 1848, criminal cases to 1850, civil matters to 1851, and equity or admiralty to 1853. Witnesses, heirs, and litigants may therefore appear before the county's formal creation in 1852 and decades before telephone books.
Other unusual Archives sources include Union School District board, election, teacher, and student records from 1854 through 1894; six family-Bible genealogy volumes; and Olympia, Yelm, and Tumwater VFW Ladies Auxiliary records from 1948 through 1956. Timberland Regional Library's genealogy resources also route researchers to the Olympia Genealogical Society, Olympia Historical Society, Olympia Family History Center, and South Sound Heritage Association.
The Southwest Regional Archives catalog describes record groups and boxes, but it is not a full-text directory for each name. Contact staff with the office, series, name, and approximate date. If a series never transferred, return to its originating office. State Library staff can perform a specific directory or death-date lookup, but they do not accept general obituary requests.
